This is one of those accidents I hate writing about but without this posting the relatives and friends back in Ireland may wonder about how to obtain information concerning the O'Connell family. I reviewed the Iowa State Patrol report of this family's June 14, 2009 accident. I’m going to report details so the extended family and friends in County Clare, Ireland know what is being reported in Iowa. The Clare Herald is reporting the story based on news reports from several sources quoting the I.S.P. report. This information comes from the I.S.P. crash report. For those interested in the Clare Republic article here is the link.

Former Gort camogie star killed in US road crash, June 16, 2009, The Clare Herald

Here is what is in the Iowa State Patrol report. Young Sarah B. O’Connell, age 15, was driving and was the only van occupant wearing her seat belt. The other passengers were the father, Henry J. O’Connell (age 50), his wife, Sarah A. (age 44) and two other small children, Colman (age 13) and Maeve (age 10). Only young Sarah who was wearing her seat belt was not ejected from the interior of the van. The van was a 2003 Honda Oddessy.

The accident occurred on June 14, 2009 at 6:36 P.M. as they were traveling southbound on Highway 61 at milepost 170 in Jackson County, Iowa. Jackson County is in eastern Iowa, just south of Dubuque and northwest of Clinton. The speed limit was 65 miles per hour (104.61 Km/hr). The airbags did deploy.

Here is the trooper’s narrative of how the accident occurred.

VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 61 AT MILE MARKER 170. VEHICLE WENT OFF ONTO RIGHT SHOULDER, DRIVER STEERED LEFT OVERCORRECTING LOOSING CONTROL IN ROADWAY. VEHICLE LEFT ROADWAY ON LEFT SIDE AND TRAVELED INTO MEDIAN AND BEGAN TO ROLLOVER. VEHICLE ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES EJECTING ALL PASSENGERS. VEHICLE CAME TO REST ON IT'S WHEELS IN THE NORTHBOUND LEFT LANE AND SHOULDER FACING EAST.

There don’t appear to be any contributing factors noted by the Iowa State Trooper who investigated the accident. The first event noted was “ran off road, right” followed by “evasive action (swerve, panic braking, etc.)” followed by “overturn/rollover”.

Both Sarah, the mother along with Maeve were flown by helicopter ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. The University Hospitals mailing directory is listed by department and the general address is University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, 200 Hawkins Drive, Room (tell them Maeve is in the pediatric ICU, Iowa City, Iowa 52242-1009.

Sarah, the daughter and her brother Colman were taken by the Maquoketa Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa.

Henry J. O’Connor appears to have been pronounced dead at the accident scene as he was taken to the Jackson Regional Hospital by the Medical Examiner. The Jackson County Regional Hospital can be contacted as follows: 700 W. Grove Street, Maquoketa, Iowa 52060 and telephone is 319-652-2474 and fax 319-652-4076. The website is http://www.healthenterprises.org.

The Iowa State Patrol can be contacted through the District 12 Office, 22365 20th Avenue, Stockton, Iowa 52769-9612. The Trooper in charge of the accident investigation appears to be ISP3633, C. Nelson from Post 12. Anyone can contact the I.S.P. at the Headquarters located at 215 East 7th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50319. Phone: 515-725-6090. Email: ispinfo@dps.state.ia.us.

District 12 contact information is different: Iowa State Patrol, District #12, 22365 20th Avenue, Stockton, IA 52769 and telephone 563-284-9501

A telephone call to the University of Iowa Patient Admissions desk (319-356-2456) has Maeve in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.). A call to this number will allow you to be connected to the room.

The reports don’t indicate if there is other family in the United States and the Midwest where Wisconsin is located. My wife’s relatives (Tubridy) are all Irish and her family hails from County Clare in Ireland. There is a still a local restaurant there named Tubridy’s. Last year in October we visited Ireland and drove around for two-weeks exploring Dublin and the southern part of Ireland from west to east. So I have some familiarity with the area. If anyone wishes more information feel free to contact us here in West Des Moines, Iowa and Barbara or I will be happy to accommodate however we can.

The posting of this information will be on the law firm’s website. This is not a solicitation for business; it is to assist the family and friends. We are sorry to read of this loss.

Family fly to comfort children orphaned in tragic car crash

By Louise Hogan, Wednesday June 17 2009

All of the children went to school in the Wisconsin city of Madison where the family had set up home.

The crash happened shortly after the school term had finished, and just two days earlier Sarah's Madison Memorial High School soccer team had played in the state tournament.

Family friend Kelly Meuer said he had known the family for almost a decade through the soccer team.

He said the family had moved between the US and Ireland on a couple of occasions, but mainly Mrs O'Connell had lived in Wisconsin with the children while Mr O'Connell was away on business. She had worked as a teacher's aide in the Madison School District. Mr O'Connell, who had a background in engineering, worked as a business consultant.

"Joe hadn't seen the kids, because he had been across the sea," Mr Meuer told a US newspaper. "They were going to take two weeks and, honestly, they didn't have an itinerary."

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

Relatives of US crash family say thank you for support

By Louise Hogan, Thursday June 18 2009

Both parents died following the crash, while Sarah and Colman (13) were hospitalised, but have since been released. Their youngest daughter, Maeve (10), was last night described as being in a "fair condition" at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Their family thanked everyone for their kind efforts through a website dedicated to the O'Connell family, who had set up home in the city of Madison, Wisconsin, after leaving Ireland around eight years ago.

The family said Sarah and Colman would be "reunited" with Maeve at the Iowa hospital.

"Maeve, who suffered more serious injuries, is progressing," they added.

Fr Brendan Walsh, the parish priest for Causeway, said the families planned to bring the bodies home, with the burial expected to take place in the Kerry village. However, a date has not yet been confirmed.

I had Sarah, the daughter in one of my classes last year. Many of her friends left messages on her facebook profile, telling her how sorry they were about what happened. One boy actually told them not to go on about it, and to give her time to recover. Thank you for putting this article out there so that others could at least know what happened.

Does anyone have the web address for the website that is dedicated to the family? I read in the Independent Ireland National News in an article written by Louise Hogan that there is such a site set up. "Their family thanked everyone for their kind efforts through a website dedicated to the O'Connell family, who had set up home in the city of Madison, Wisconsin, after leaving Ireland around eight years ago."

Tragedy has a way of bringing family and good people together. We wish the family well. I'd suggest the family get the children counseling, even if they say they don't want any. It's important to talk it all out. Our prayers are with them. Steve and Barbara

I was driving home from Dubuque the day of the accident. I was the second car to arrive, and I threw my shoes off and went running. I've worked in the health care field for seven years, and I know CPR and first aid...so I thought maybe I could help until emergency crews got there. I don't want to get into details for the sake of the children, but I tried to save the father. I have been thinking of young Sarah every day since that horrible accident. I went to her and I held her and I dressed some of her wounds. I would like desperately to know that she is okay, emotionally. That poor child. All I could do was hold her. I tried to keep her as calm as I could, to prevent her from going into shock. I held her beautiful face to mine and told her to look at me, look only at me...that I was there and I wasn't going to leave her until help arrived. I was terrified that she would see everything around her and be traumatized. If I could have opened up my soul and taken away all of her pain I would gladly have done so. If anyone knows how she is...would you please contact me? My email address is PatriciaKHicks@yahoo.com

I will never forget those gorgeous, terrified eyes. I can't help but think "why her? why that young, beautiful, innocent girl?" All she cared about was her family...she ignored her own pain and all she wanted to know was if her brother and sister were okay. She probably won't remember me, but I will NEVER forget her. I gave her a piece of my heart that horrible evening...and every night when I close my eyes to sleep...I see her. Pleading and begging for forgiveness. This was NOT her fault, and the media has splashed it all over presenting it as though it was.

Again, if anyone knows how she is doing, please please contact me. I (for some reason I can't explain) feel as though she has become a part of my heart. Poor Sarah.

I've received word privately from a relative in Chicago that indicates the children have plenty of support. From her message the children seem to be mending and have a very large extended family in Ireland. From what has been said it appears the children are back in Ireland although I could be mistaken. Posting here is a good way to transmit your concerns and requests. Another way would be to write to theherald@live.ie, the Irish newspaper, The Clare Herald, that has covered this story. They may be interested in your story for their newspaper and that's a way to communicate with Sarah. Good luck. Steve Lombardi

Okay. I have to ask. How is it possible that a 15-year-old driver with practically no experience behind the wheel takes a large, fully loaded van onto an interstate? Whose decision was that? And why was only the driver wearing a seatbelt? Don't ADULTS ever learn?

It's a tragedy, true, but one that could have been avoided--why weren't two good decisions made instead of two bad ones?

I don't mean to sound harsh, but in response to the previous post: please mind that there are family members of these individuals you are speaking of that read this blog.

Secondly, it is NOT illegal for a 15 year old to drive on an interstate (or on any other road, in town or otherwise) in the state of Iowa as long as they have obtained their learners' permit through the DMV. That is an issue you should argue with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Not here.

So I am going to correct you on your "first mistake":

1) Sarah should have been accompanied by a seatbelted adult over the age of 25 in the front passenger seat. This is also a law in the state of Iowa when an unlicensed person with a learners' permit is driving.

It certainly is easy to throw the word "tragedy" around and place blame and point fingers. You were not there. Do not judge, that is not your place, nor your responsibility. Do not put more weight on that young girls' shoulders. What a horrible and despicable thing to attempt.

Please be considerate of the family when you post things like this. You are entitled to your opinion, and I agree that the family should have been seat-belted...but how many times have YOU not worn your seat-belt?

I don't question that legally she was able to drive. I question the judgment that put an inexperienced driver on an interstate driving a heavy vehicle that was full of passengers.

As to your second point, I have NEVER not worn my seatbelt, not since I was first behind the wheel. Once you develop that habit, you don't "skip" wearing your seatbelt. So, as tragic as this accident was, several people made a decision not only not to wear seatbelts, but to let an inexperienced driver pilot a vehicle at the same time.

I'm sorry that you believe I'm cruel and judgmental, but the facts remain: an adult parent who didn't exercise good judgment by not wearing or insisting that others wear seatbelts, while allowing an inexperienced driver to drive on a road at 65 mph.

Things might have been different if more than the driver had been wearing a seatbelt. THAT'S the tragedy.

with all due respect to the last comment it is very easy to sit here and say oh they should have done this or that but the fact of the matter is these poor children have to live with whoevers decision it was. my heart really goes out to all the children but mostly sarah , she's old enough to fully understand what happened and her life will never be the same again. If if was their parents choice not to wear their seatbelts then they paid the ultimate price , this was not their fault nor was it sarah's at all. Meave and Colman did not have their seatbelts on and they survived so who's to know whether or not their parents would have lived if they had seatbelts on. all i can say is i pray for the children they are the real victims in this tragedy

I am from New York and the day I read about this family's fate my heart broke for the children and all I could do was pray and cry for Sarah. I prayed so hard that God would give her peace in her heart that only He can give so that she won't believe that this was her fault. I find myself praying for her and her siblings every day. God has put this burden on my heart to continue praying for them and their family. God is in control and has a plan for each child for His glory and Sarah will be an amazing and strong woman some day and she will be a blessing to others through this experience. If there is any way I can give my support to the children or their relatives who are now responsible for them, like a fund raiser of some sort please let me know.
