A fatal car crash occurred on Sunday, May 27. The car that the two victims were in drove off Highway 6 and landed in a pond in Iowa County. Although this accident resulted in the death of two people, Scott Falb, from the Iowa Department of Transportation, said that there have been fewer fatal car crashes this year than last year.

Falb claims that the decrease in fatal car crashes is due to the increased usage of seat belts. He said that seat-belt usage is currently at 90% and that if it increases even more, the fatality rate could decrease even more significantly.

"Everytime we push seat belt numbers up, we cut into the group that is most likely to have a crash," Falb explains, "because as you get into 75 or 80 or 90 percent, you're getting into that percentage of people that are most likely to have crashes."

Although the focus in this news item is on seat belts, one can not ignore that the car drove off the road resulting in the deaths of two people. Why did it run off the roadway? What was the condition of the roadway? Did the surface cause the driver to lose control? What was the condition of the car, and more specifically the tires? And finally what was the driver's condition? Sober or under the influence? There are many causes of motor vehicle crashes and focusing only on the seat belt usage is but one aspect of practicing in this area. A thorough investigation is primary. Photographs of the scene and photographs of the car, truck or motorcycle is equally important.
