Tyler Edward Dawdy, an 18-year old from Akron, Iowa, was killed Saturday, May 19 in a collision with a tractor. Dawdy was headed westbound on county road C-38 when his car collided with a tractor driven by 83-year old Gerald Deiterman.

Deiterman was headed eastbound, trying to make a left-hand turn when the tractor loader arms struck the left side of Dawdy's car. Dawdy was immediately taken to Mercy Medical Center and then pronounced dead. Deiterman suffered no injuries. An investigation of the accident is taking place.

I've seen this type of accident previously. It can be caused by sudden and unexpected movements of the farm machinery that is often times oversized. With glare on the tractor windows it is often times difficult for the driver of a car to have any eye contact with the operator or to see where the operator is looking or if he/she is signaling. A complete and thorough investigation needs to be made.
