On August 25th 2009 53-year-old Adam Burk of Carter Lake died after the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu he was driving was hit from behind. Authorities are saying that Mr. Burk was in the left lane of I-80 Westbound when his car was hit from behind by a 2004 Pontiac GTO driven by a 19-year-old man. Mr. Burk died shortly after and the driver of the GTO and two other people were treated at Mercy Hospital and released. The cause of the crash has not been determined and one has to wonder what was going on that caused a distraction; either way it’s just another example of an avoidable loss of life.

Don’t you wonder why one car would rear end another car or truck or motorcycle while driving on interstate 80? One reason we’ve seen has to do with distracted drivers; drivers busy on the cell phone or while text messaging. It’s really pretty predictable; in fact research shows that use of cell phones while driving is about as unsafe as drunken driving. I’ve written about this before and I see my colleagues, Wayne Parsons and Brooks Schuelke have as well.
