Kansas City, Missouri – June 2009 – This wrong-way driver went northbound in the southbound lanes on U.S. 71 in Kansas City. He crashed head-on into a semi-truck upon which both vehicles then exploded and became engulfed in flames. The offending driver was seriously injured but the semi-truck driver received only minor injuries.
Reva, Virginia – July 2009 - This one involved U.S. 29 and was a head-on collision. The title to the article states alcohol was not involved but few details are given in the article.
Virginia Beach, Virginia – June 2009 – The wrong-way driver was arrested for OWI, but was appears also to have been taking prescription medications for brain damage that predated this accident. The brain damage was alleged to be caused by a work-related injury when he as shocked or electrocuted while working on a tower. He was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 264.
Palm Bay, Florida – July 2009 – The driver is 84 from Melbourne and accidentally drove north in the southbound lanes of I-95. She got on at Palm Bay road. She drove about a mile, then stopped but not in time for other cars attempting to avoid here to collide. Two southbound cars that stopped were rear-ended by a semi-truck. Some were injured. And then?
“When she (Phillips) calmed down, she was not confused,” Montes said. “She was upset that someone might have gotten hurt.”
Then Phillips turned her 2007 Hundai around and drove off.
Phillips was cited for going the wrong way and must undergo a medical evaluation. Depending on the outcome of the test, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles could make her take a driving test. She has a current driver’s license, officials said.
