Young Girl Severely Injured After Being Thrown From Truck

On Thursday, May 31, a seven-year old girl was thrown through the windshield of a pick-up truck on Interstate-35 near Norwalk. The vehicle was reported as swerving and hitting the side guard-rail before spinning out of control and hitting the opposite side guard-rail. The girl was then thrown from the truck, landing near a cement rail.

The girl was taken by helicopter to a Des Moines hospital and treated for severe injuries. The girl's mother was driving the truck at the time of the accident. She was treated for minor injuries. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but it is under investigation.

Lieutenant Tom Lampe says there are several possible scenarios as to why the truck was swerving:

"It could be simply reaching down for something, talking on the cell phone to mechanical to (driving) under the influence," Lampe says. "That's what we're trying to determine."

The quality of the road surface is also a possible cause that should be investigated.
