Car Surfing Student Suffers Head Injury

A high school student is lucky to be alive and facing a long recovery, after suffering a head injury when he slid off the hood of a friend's car, while car surfing, on Friday.

As of Sunday, the seventeen-year-old boy remains in serious condition at Mercy Medical Center.

A statement was released by the boy's mother concerning her son's condition:

"On Friday afternoon, Stefen made a poor choice by sitting on the hood of a friend's car for a ride. I do not condone this behavior, but as a mother, I want to make it clear that he was not doing this as a stunt -- only using it as a quick way to get to the school building from the parking lot. Unfortunately, an accident occurred, and Stefen suffered a head injury.

"Stefen is still in serious condition at Mercy Medical Center but is (slowly) getting better. We are expecting a long recovery process and our family is focusing on him getting well.

"I would like (this to) be a lesson to all teenagers that poor choices lead to serious consequences. Thankfully Stefen is alive and we are all aware a tragedy could have occurred."

Police say, the boy was on the hood of the car and the driver, another high school student, was taking him to the front of the school. The accident happened when the boy slid of the car when the driver started turning into a parking spot. The boy then hit his head on the curb. When police arrived, they found him lying against the curb, bleeding from the nose and back of his head.

Car surfing, or riding on part of a vehicle not intended for passengers, is illegal in Iowa, and can result in a fine of $25 and a possible court appearance.
