The EF5 tornado in Parkersburg, Iowa that leveled the town on May 25, 2008 is still being felt. An EF5 tornado is the most violent tornado possible and is based on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The former scale is named the Fujita Scale; the new scale is enhanced due to taking into account newer construction standards.

An EF5 tornado has wind speeds at or above 200 mph or 322 km/h.

With an EF5 you can expect the following damage: Explosive damage. Strong frame houses leveled off foundations and swept away; automobile-sized missiles fly through the air in excess of 100 m (300 ft); steel reinforced concrete structure badly damaged; high-rise buildings have significant structural deformation; incredible phenomena will occur.

Here is how you can participate in real life. The City and schools are seeking volunteers to work from August 5 to 10, 2009 to rebuild the playgrounds. You don't have to go for all six days. The town fundraised and from a generous donation from the Miracle Recreating Equipment Co. raised $500,000 to replace playground equipment destroyed or damaged by the tornado. If you can’t volunteer but want to help this is your chance. Bring a tent and a sleeping bag, I'm sure someone will let you take a shower and brush your teeth in their bathroom.

Don't worry abut any conflict with the Iowa Sate Fair from August 13 through 23, 2009.

TURN OFF THE TV AND CELL PHONE AND GET INVOLVED

If you’d like to help, but are unable to make the trip to Parkersburg for the playground installation Amy May provided different ideas for you to still participate.

Hello, Mr. Lombardi. Diane Manifold forwarded your email.

If someone cannot help out at the site during installation, our Parkersburg Playground Committee is still accepting donations to cover expenses of the city-wide project. Although the equipment funds have been
raised, and the company offered an amazing deal for the equipment, there are other costs involved that will be incurred such as drainage materials, surfacing materials, engineering and excavating costs.

Diane called yesterday to share that a number of volunteers have begun to call, indicating that they will be coming to help with the playground project at the elementary school site. We do not have exact numbers of volunteers yet across the entire 6-day project, but we expect to have a very good turnout as people continue to get the word out about the call for help. Since the tornado last May, it seems that so many wonderful people across the state and across the country have been there for the community of
Parkersburg. Not to mention that our community members and the school community is always supportive of our schools when we need help of any kind.

Thank you for your inquiry and for any assistance you provide in helping us make these wonderful play areas a reality for the youth of our area.
