Hand sanitizers are thought to be a safe way to kill germs quickly without water. However, small children may think sanitizers look like water and some have fruity smells, so they think it is okay to drink. Many sanitizers are alcohol-based and a small amount consumed by a child could result in serious problems.
Tammy Noble, a nurse and spokeswoman for the Iowa Poison Control Center, says there have been many incidents where children drink hand sanitizers. She says that sanitizers are often left out on counters and are easily accessible to children, but the problem is that the product can contain up to 62% alcohol. Small children quickly become intoxicated if they consume sanitizers.

Many people leave a small bottle of these hand sanitizers in the car and available for the children without considering what is in the liquid. Consider who uses your car, how old they are, the ages of those they transport and that children regularly involve themselves in horseplay.
