The effects of the earthquake beneath the South Pacific Ocean may be felt from the west coast of the USA to the eastern coast of Japan. The coast of the USA from California north to Washington may be at risk. It is unknown how strong the currents and waves may be but lifeguards on the coast of southern California have cleared the beaches to be safe.

Dozens are reported to be dead in the Samoas due to the tsunami that was a result of the earthquake that hit 20.5 miles beneath the ocean. Tuna canneries, a dominant industry in this area were closed.

President Obama has declared American Samoa a national disaster due to the devastation and death toll so far. A thirteen foot wave has hit the coast of Tonga and officials fear at least five have been killed as a result.
