Unfortunately this is the second such accident of this type I've read this week. Motorcycles remain a greater source of risk than motor vehicles do. People just don't see motor cyclists when using the roadway. And so anything you can do to increase your visibility will help you to avoid those who drive carelessly. This may include different color clothing, driving with your front headlight on, driving with a brightly colored helmet or as you approach intersections slow and then slowly proceed through them.
As a motorcyclist check your insurance limits and make sure you have underinsured and underinsured limits - after all that insurance coverage is for you against those who drive carelessly and aren't covered with sufficient insurance limits. Also check the medical pay provision of your motorcycle insurance. Get the highest coverage you can afford. And check your health insurance to make sure it covers you while operating a motor cycle. To really save on your premium carry your auto, homeowners and motor cycle insurance with the same company. By combining different types of insurance you will save at least 20% of the premium. Also if you don't have disability insurance you should. Remember this type of insurance is what protects you the rider. Lastly, invest in a good pair of sunglasses so you can clearly see.
