Over $1 million in fines proposed as a result of an ammonia leak at a Waterloo meat packing plant.

Over $1 million in fines have been proposed by the Iowa Division of Labor against those it believes were in violation of Iowa's laws when ammonia leaked and took the life of Elizabeth Myers and several other workers to the hospital. This is an indication of serious violations and the fact there are two different companies is an indication of potential liability outside of the Iowa Workers' Compensation Act.

The Iowa Division of Labor Services announced Thursday it has proposed $1.16 million in citations and civil penalties for Beef Products Inc. in the Aug. 31 accident at its plant that killed Elizabeth "Liza" Myers, 44, of La Porte City. Another $88,500 in citations was issued for Modern Engineering and Piping, of Evansdale, which was working on BPI's ammonia system at the time.

I have several other entries on this incident that may provide further information.
