The families of four construction workers killed and over 20 others injured in a 2003 parking garage collapse at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, has been settled for $101 million. This is said to be one of the biggest settlements in a construction accident in American history to date.

The trial was set for June 6th in Atlantic City Superior Court. The suit defendants included the Tropicana, general contractor Keating Building Corp., Fabi Construction Inc and other various contractors and inspectors.

The collapse occurred because the floors were not connected to the walls using the required reinforcing steel.

The Oct. 30, 2003, collapse was investigated by local, state, and federal authorities. In April 2004, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations and fined four contractors after its investigation revealed that the construction site was flawed in design, execution and oversight and that basic construction and engineering principles were broken or ignored. It specifically cited the failure to install steel connections between the floor and walls.
