On Thursday September 17th 2009 a motorcycle accident led to the death of a Fairfield resident Colleen Smith, and injury to her husband Harold Smith. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were on a 2006 Harley Davidson heading southbound on Highway 1 following another vehicle when about 2 miles north of Keosauqua a deer entered the roadway and hit the motorcycle. It's reported that Mr. Smith did try to break to avoid the collision which caused the motorcycle to slide ending up in the west ditch with both passengers being thrown from the vehicle.
