H1N1 Update....should you or your family members get vaccinated?

H1N1 Update… should you or your family members get vaccinated?

76 children in this country have died as a result of the H1N1 flu. 4-year old Isabella Ragan was one of the lucky ones to survive. This Mississippi pre-schooler was a prime example of what happens when “swine flu” goes wrong. Despite this experience, her parents have stated they probably will not immunize their younger son due to their fear of the vaccine. A third of U.S. parents agree and oppose the H1N1 vaccine fearing the side effects out weigh the effects of the flu.

A study of the insert for the H1N1 vaccine has been discussed on this site previously. My own investigation shows the following contradictions to that writer’s research. She states that a report warns that the vaccine can cause Guillian-Barre Syndrome, and infers that this information is taken from the pharmaceutical insert. That is wrong and misleading. The report she cites is from the “Pandemic Flu Online” website.

The mission statement copied directly from their website: (misspelled word underlined)

“… a collaborative effort of several health freedom, vaccine awareness, and government/pharmaceutical wathcdog individuals and organizations. Our intention is for this website to be your one stop resource for accurate information on the flu pandemic, the known dangers of the H1N1 pandemic flu vaccine in production and what you can do to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community from the potential of adverse effects from mass vaccination with an experimental vaccine.”

They appear to have no medical credentials. They appear to be histrionic alarmists whose only purpose appears to be “chicken little” diatribes and collection of “donations” to support their continued propaganda.

The insert for the H1N1 vaccine states the following in reference to Guillian-Barre Syndrome:

If GBS (Guillian-Barre Syndrome) has occurred within 6 weeks of previous influenza vaccination, the decision to give Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be based on careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks.

NO WHERE DOES THE PACKAGE INSERT WARN THAT THE VACCINE CAN CAUSE GUILLIAN-BARRE SYNDROME.

What is Guillian-Barre syndrome? According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) website, this is a disorder of the immune system that attacks the peripheral nervous system. This disorder is rare and usually occurs after a viral or bacterial infection which suggests that certain characteristics of some viruses and bacteria may trigger the immune system inappropriately. In addition, their research shows surgery or vaccinations sometimes trigger the syndrome, not cause it. Again, Ms. Allen, where is the veracity of “your facts”? Do not muddy the H1N1 debate with your own opinion framed as research and facts.

Dr. Anne Schuchat of the CDC is surprised by all the misinformation being spread on the H1N1 vaccine. Top health officials state that “the risks from not getting the swine flu [H1N1] vaccine are greater than any potential risks associated with the vaccine.”

As parents, consumers, and intelligent people it is up to us to decide whether the vaccine is appropriate for our families. But, this decision must be based on the truth and research from medical professionals not opinion or fear. The InjuryBoard is about fact, not fiction. When we create alarm based on fiction we are not performing a public service, but a disservice to those we publish to. Every mother and father should do their own research before making a decision.

The website for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a very factual portal for H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) facts.

Is there a doctor in the house?

And for the kids out there, here's the H1N1 Song.

You missed line 160 and line 179. They make a connection between taking the vaccine and GBS.

Thanks you so much for doing this Barbara! I had hoped that the author of the original story would do the clarification since she got the facts wrong. Your articles have consistently been well researched and they are good resources for the public, like me, to be safe and stay healthy and prevent injuryies.

Thanks Wayne! Dear "Concerned" I do not see the direct link between GBS and the vaccine on the lines you quoted from the package insert. I do read however, under the Immune System disorders that GSB is included. This would confirm my statement that the insert warns if GBS has occurred with previous immunizations that before the H1N1 vaccine is administered careful consideration of the risks and benefits should be considered. That discussion should take place with your personal physician. I believe line 179 confirms this same statement but thanks for your comment.

Barbara and Wayne-

Let's not get polarized here over health care. There are many people who simply do not trust our officials to tell us the truth about vaccines for example, and with good reason. Despite the many parents who have watched their children change overnight after a vaccine, the CDC insists Thimerosal doesn't cause autism, for example. It insisted that Thimerosal was removed from vaccines when it did absolutely NOTHING to verify that the manufacturers had indeed done so.

All of that aside, the CDC and FDA have a golden opportunity with H1N1 to correct some of the mistakes of the past. Why there is not a full page front and center on the CDC website about H1N1 under "Safety Concerns" - I don't understand.

In this page the CDC could list the five vaccines that it has purchased for use in this country and their ingredients. Consumers could click the product insert and see if they are preserved. Johns Hopkins does a very good job of this for childhood vaccines. The CDC could also list which ones contain adjuvants and what they are.

I've searched the web site and do not see this information readily available. Correct me if I'm wrong here. Why is it not available? Why not tell the truth? People can decide if they want preservatives or adjuvants but they need the information first. To not do so perpetuates the distrust over public health.

So you've suggested a good National News story for me- thank you!!

Unfortunately, it doesn't ease public concerns when there are nurses and health care workers in NY trying to "stop the shot." They don't want to be forced into getting the H1N1 vaccine or being fired. Their concern? The adequate testing for vaccine's safety.

Jane,

I agree that many people do not trust the health care industry to tell us the truth about vaccines and actually I agree with them. Who can we trust?

My blog was aimed at a previous IB blog and the mis-information that was posted. The original blog to which I linked stated, "The Swine Flu Vaccine Package insert warns that it can cause Guillian-Barre Syndrome, etc." which the insert does not. In my blog, I linked directly to the insert and quoted the statement exactly which states, "If GBS has occurred within 6 weeks of previous influenza vaccination, the decision to give Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine should be based on careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks." Some of what has been printed, even on IB, were mis-leading and not true. Ms. Allen's link to the "report" she states her research is from is to a website, Pandemic Flu Online, not the insert at all. The principal at Pandemic Flu Online is an attorney for which I do not see any medical qualifications for. As I stated, my feeling is these people are alarmists who are trolling for clients in the name of "bad vaccines".

In addition, there have been 2 updates posted to the original blog I referenced which state that the H1N1 vaccine does not contain adjuvants or squalene which contradicts the first paragraph of the original blog and makes it very confusing.

This vaccine is a hot button issue right now and I attempted to write a well balanced and well researched informative blog. I was not advising the reader to have the vaccine, only to give them information to make the decision for themselves. When I read the blog when it originally posted, I believed the information to be true because I have come to trust Injury Board as a legitimate news outlet. When I found new information on this vaccine and realized that this original blog was not providing the truth and dug a little into the links felt the need to write a blog that pointed this out.

We're just starting to get the inoculation programme over here in the UK, not the fastest reaction i've ever seen from the government. Makes you wonder if it really was a super epidemic whether or not we would have made it.

hmmm. r we talking to lawyers here. what's the dif between can cause and if. if you get GBS. sounds like a bunch of b.s. there is no real important correction here. so if you get gbs call your doctor because the h1n1 does not cause gbs, but you might get it after recieving the vaccine. and I think jane hit the nail on the head, why is information being witheld, why can we not get all the facts from the cdc, why is it so hard to get all the information to make an informed decision? we are getting all the propoganda and scare tactics and people are not so dumb anymore and see through the p.r. trust is earned and the gov has betrayed that trust too many times for us to blindly believe them anymore. all in the name of greed so kiss our sweet little america goodbye all in the name of greed we will crumble.
