State records show that 94 Iowans have gone to the hospital in the last three years as a result of accidents involving lawn mowers. Lawn-mower related injuries occur mostly to the hands and feet, but are sometimes more serious and possibly fatal. A 63-year old man died recently from a lawn-mower accident in Runnells. He was mowing down a steep slope when the mower flipped and rolled over him.

In another lawn mower accident a Grinnell worker was injured and later died when the lawnmower he was driving fell off of the helipad at work. It is not uncommon to suffer a brain injury or a head injury in a roll over accident.

Mowing steep hills requires extra caution, but it is said that the proper way to mow a slope is up and down, rather than side to side. Some slopes may also require a push mower depending on how steep the slope is. Caution should also be used when there are other people around the lawn mower. Objects may be thrown from the blade and could easily hit someone nearby.

Some lawnmowers, Lazer Z, have roll over protection. This is known as a ROP. The Lazer Z also has a seat belt that secures the passenger in the seat. A roll over incident may be caused by the machinery itself or a lack of maintenance of the lawn mower or of the hill itself. There are many causes that need to be investigated.
