A house fire on Tuesday, May 15 led to the death of a brother and sister in Keokuk, Iowa. The children were Elizabeth White and Dylan White. A medical examiner has determined that the cause of death was smoke inhalation. The parents, Matthew White and Joyce Boley, suffered serious burns and were taken to University of Iowa Hospitals. One other child also survived the fire. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Iowa Code 100.18 titled "Smoke Detectors" requires working smoke detectors to be installed in certain residential buildings. The state fire marshal has adopted rules and established appropriate procedures to administer this requirement. The law requires batteries that are charged and cause the smoke detectors to activate when required.
